INTRODUCTION

The importance of spare parts Management for Indian Industry can be easily visualized by the fact, that nearly 50 – 60% of the maintenance cost is represented by Spare Parts. Conventionally the problem of spare parts has been visualized only from the inventory control point of view. Obviously, this could not bring in the desired results as expected. The management of spare parts has to have a total systems approach and should be aimed at achieving the ultimate objective i.e maximum availability of plant and machinery at the least cost. This programme is planned to review the various developments that have taken place in the systems and technical aspects of spare parts management function in the recent years.
