One-Day Workshop on "e - Governance"

Why is E-Governance the new buzzword?

The colonial view of the Government used to be as a “CONTROLLER and RULER”. Today the Government’s role is like that of a coordinator and service provider. The Government is responsible for providing certain services to the citizens, just like a corporation is responsible for managing the value chain, which leads to output. Business corporations have discovered for the last two decades that with information. Technology they can make the value chain more efficient and this leads to quality increase and cost savings. Similarly, Governments have discovered that with Information Technology they can make the provision of the services to the citizens more efficient, transparent, can save costs and lead to a higher level of efficiency. This application of Information Technology enabled Process & Systems is called E-Governance or E-Government.

What do most E-Governance Initiatives involve?

It involves the entire citizens interfaces with the Government: delivery of government products and services, access to government information & transactions.

The programme highlights all the three aspects of E-Governance namely

· Information Technology Frame Works

· Citizens Access

· Government Process Improvement

Why should Government adopt E-Governance and what are its practical benefits?

A cute acronym has been coined for these possible results of E-Governance – SMART which stands for Simple, Moral, Accountable, Responsive and Transparent Governments.

Practical benefits include simpler documentation, faster applications, simpler procurement, greater reach of services, accelerating education, public participation and simplifying transactions.

Programme Design & Objectives

Programme on TPM at Cochin

PROGRAMME

on

TOTAL PRODUCTIVE MAINTENANCE (TPM)

INTRODUCTION

Total Productive Maintenance, widely known by its acronym TPM, has become a buzz word among the successful organizations in India and abroad. Concept of TPM was evolved in Japan and promoted by Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM) since the year 1970. What TPM does is help companies achieve high level of productivity by developing self-managing abilities in workers and managers which, in turn improve skills and work practices, ultimately leading to reduction in costs and increase in production. The essence of TPM is business process improvement through Working Teams, cutting across organizational layers. These teams are empowered and supported by suitable training and other inputs. They handle the entire process of problem identification, suggestions for improvement and implementation of the solution in collaborative fashion. A number of leading organizations in India, namely Grasim, Vikram Cement, TANFAC, Hindustan Lever, etc., have already implemented and also won the TPM Excellence Awards.

This programme is aimed at imparting necessary knowledge and skills to the executives to initiate implementation of the concepts of TPM in their organisations.

Energy Saving through Pinch Technology and Process Integration

Two-Day Programme on

Energy Saving through
Pinch Technology and Process Integration

5th & 6th October 2006

INTRODUCTION

While oil prices continue to climb, energy conservation remains the prime concern for many process industries. The challenge every process engineer is faced with is to seek answers to questions related to their process energy patterns. A few of the frequently asked questions are:

  1. Are the existing processes as energy efficient as they should be?

  2. How can new projects be evaluated with respect to their energy requirements?

  3. What changes can be made to increase the energy efficiency without incurring any cost?

  4. What investments can be made to improve energy efficiency?

  5. What is the most appropriate utility mix for the process?

  6. How to put energy efficiency and other targets like reducing emissions, increasing plant capacities, improve product qualities etc, into a one coherent strategic plan for the overall site?
All of these questions and more can be answered with a full understanding of Pinch Technology and an awareness of the available tools for applying it in a practical way.

Programme on "How to make best use of Effluent Treatment Plant"

Programme on

How to make best use of Effluent Treatment Plant

Date: 03- 04 August 2006

Hotel Breeze, Chennai

BACKGROUND

Effluent treatment plants installed in many industries are “stuck” and unable to perform satisfactorily due to various reasons such as non-representative design data, flawed design criteria, inadequate O & M practices, poorly trained manpower, etc.

With more pressure from pollution control boards, public and ISO 14001 certification, it is imperative that the industries will have to gear up for improved and consistent performance of effluent treatment plants. This would necessitate training of relevant personnel in the concepts, practices and techniques pertaining to effluent treatment.

Based on the rich expertise drawn out of designing, commissioning, operating, evaluating, optimising and upgrading various effluent treatment plants, National Productivity Council (NPC) offers this unique programme.

Programme on Integrated Implementation and Auditing of ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18001

Programme on

Integrated Implementation and Auditing of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001
30-31st August 2006

Organized by
Environment Division
Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Productivity
Background

Most industries are seeking certification for various ISO standards like quality, environment and health and safety in line with global needs. Most industries certified with ISO 9001 aim for ISO 14001 certification followed by OHSAS 18001 certification after a gap of about two years. Also each certification process takes about a year. This process of pursuing ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certificates separately requires industries to spend twice the cost and time on document preparation and internal audit (after implementation). This results in loss of valuable productivity for the industry.

We, at NPC, feel that such wastages of manpower time and resources can be avoided by integrated implementation and auditing of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. NPC is already following the methodology of integrated implementation and auditing in few industries. We would like to share with you our experience in integrated implementation and auditing for enhancement of productivity as well as reduction of cost.   This programme is targeted to both types of industries; those implementing the standards concurrently and those, who have already implemented and interested in integrating the standards.

Programme Coverage

This course will provide the participants with an understanding of the following:

  • Overview and interpretation of Standards

  • Relationships between ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001

  • Environmental and OHS Legal compliance issues

  • Integrated objectives, targets and policy

  • Optimized program implementation and operation

TEAM BUILDING AND TEAM WORK

BACKGROUND

The liberalization process coupled with globalization of markets, has brought intense competition amongst industries and enterprises.  Their future survival and growth increasingly depends on how they overcome these challenges.  Organizations have to think beyond traditional basis of work and move on to emerging paradigms of surpassing competition.

Teams and Teamwork are the keys to building high performance.  Yet, a vast majority does not focus on Team Building and Team Working aspects and opportunities.  Teams have turned companies around.  Their accomplishments, insights and enthusiasm are eloquent testament to the power of Teams.
